Post-procedure recovery — EVLT & Varithena

Most patients are walking out the same day and back to desk work within 1–2 days. Here's what to expect and how to care for yourself in the weeks that follow.

What's normal

Normal early experiences

  • Bruising that can last 1–2 months
  • Tenderness along the closed vein
  • Mild aching for 3–7 days
  • Some skin discoloration
  • Minimal drainage from the catheter site
First 24 hours

The first day

  • Walk for 10–15 minutes every 1–2 hours while awake
  • Wear your compression stocking continuously
  • Stay hydrated; avoid prolonged sitting or lying down
  • Shower after 24 hours (no baths or pools for 7 days)
  • Resume your normal eating habits
Compression

Compression stocking

EVLTContinuously for 24 hours, then during waking hours for 1–2 weeks.
VarithenaDuring waking hours for 2 weeks.
Activity

Activity restrictions

  • Frequent short walks are encouraged
  • No heavy lifting (over 25 lbs) or strenuous exercise for 1 week
  • No air travel or long road trips for 2–4 weeks
  • Most desk workers return in 1–2 days
Medications

Medications

  • Take prescribed NSAIDs (ibuprofen/naproxen) for exactly 2 weeks as directed
  • Continue blood thinners on your regular schedule
  • Keep all other medications unchanged
  • Cool packs are okay for 15 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours
Follow-up

Site care & follow-up ultrasound

No lotions, creams, or ointments on the site unless instructed — light bruising is normal. A follow-up ultrasound is required 1–2 weeks after your procedure to confirm closure and screen for blood clots. Please do not skip this visit, even if you feel completely back to normal.
